Why is Reading Missing During Bracketing?

<supportagent>Use this article only when the student is actively in Reading bracketing. Reference: Quick Start Guide: Bracketing in Dash.

Before advising that Language work is blocking Reading, confirm that all of the following are true:

  1. The student is using Dash (TimeBack does not follow the bracketing rules).
  2. The student is currently in the Reading bracketing flow.
  3. The previous Reading bracketing test included KG lessons from Language.
  4. The above Language lessons were never completed.

Otherwise, treat the case as a separate Reading assignment, Reading content, or Reading test request.</supportagent>

Students and Guides may notice students missing lessons and metrics for the Reading subject during the bracketing process.

Unlike other subjects, a Reading test can assign Knowledge Gaps (KGs) under the Language subject. When this happens, the next Reading test is paused until those KGs are completed. This is normal and helps build the foundation needed for stronger reading comprehension.

This depends on the learning app and how it groups ELA standards. For example:

  • In IXL, “Common Core State Standards: Reading: Informational Text” is grouped inside a broader “Language Arts” category.
  • A Reading test may push lessons from this standard as KGs.
  • Dash may push lessons from this category under the Language subject.
Scenario Expected behavior What to do
The student is actively in Reading bracketing, and their most recent Reading test assigned Language Knowledge Gaps. Reading may pause until the Language Knowledge Gap lessons are completed. This is expected. Complete the assigned Language Knowledge Gap lessons. After those lessons are completed, Dash will automatically assign the next Reading test.
The student is actively in Reading bracketing, but the Language Knowledge Gap lessons are not visible. The Language lessons may be blocked by another required Language test that is part of the same bracketing flow. Complete the required Language test first. Once the Language Knowledge Gap lessons become available, complete them to continue Reading bracketing.
The student is not currently in Reading bracketing. The Reading pause described in this article does not apply. Do not use this article as the reason Reading is missing.

Next steps

  1. Complete your assigned Language Knowledge Gap lessons. You can find these on Dash under My Required Learning (look under Language).
  2. Continue Reading bracketing. After you complete the Language Knowledge Gap lessons, Dash will automatically assign your next Reading test.

Summary

Reading test → Language gap identified → Complete Language lessons → Next Reading test.

FAQ

  • Q: Why is my Reading test paused?
A: Reading bracketing pauses when a Language Knowledge Gap is identified. You’ll need to complete the Language Knowledge Gap lessons before the next Reading assessment is assigned.
  • Q: What should I do to resume my Reading tests?
A: Complete all assigned Language Knowledge Gap lessons. Dash will then automatically assign the next Reading test.
  • Q: Why do Language Knowledge Gaps come first?
A: Language skills are foundational for reading comprehension, and improving them supports better performance in later Reading tests.
  • Q: Can I skip the Language lessons and go straight to Reading?
A: No. Subsequent Reading assessments are only assigned once the identified Language Knowledge Gaps are completed.
  • Q: What if I do not see the Language Knowledge Gaps either?

A: Dash might block lessons if a test is pending for over a week. If you see a Language test, completing it should unlock the Language lessons, which include the Knowledge Gaps from Reading bracketing.
