Understanding What Content Counts for Accuracy and Mastery in Knewton

Overview

You may be wondering which content in Knewton is considered when calculating Accuracy and Mastery data for Dash and your 2H sessions.

It is important to understand that all content is crucial for your learning path and you shouldn't skip it, unless the Alpha staff instructs you otherwise. In most cases, learning this content is also required for you to be able to pass your Standardized (or Mastery) Tests, but only some specific types of content are currently tracked for Accuracy and Mastery.

Solution

Here is a breakdown of the content that is tracked and not tracked for accuracy and mastery:

Tracked Content

  1. Regular content from your learning objectives. This means the questions that you get when learning from standalone units (not part of tests or quizzes).
Note: Remember that Dash tracks your real accuracy (all correct and incorrect questions), but sometimes Knewton only shows you the "Best attempt". So, for example, you may see a unit as having 4/4 correct questions, but Dash may say 4/7. This is normal, as Alpha keeps higher standards, and we know our students can achieve these goals.
    • Example Units:

    • Example question:

    • Important: As with most content in Alpha School, these units only count for Mastery (EMUs) the first time you complete them. If you revisit them, you will see that the "START" button has now become "PRACTICE" instead. Practice units only count for Accuracy, and not for Mastery, because they are content that you've mastered before.

  2. Tests. They're easy to identify by the word "TEST" in a purple oval. Note: Completing a test will also grant you a 2H session.

  3. "Review" Units. You will usually find review units below tests. There may be more than one unit to complete in the list, and each of them counts as a separate unit (1 mastered level).

    • Important notes about review units: As all other units, they will only count for mastery the first time that you complete them. In some cases, it may seem that these units were never completed before, even though that's not the case. So, to prevent confusion, see the example below:
      • Let's say you go to this "Review" unit under the test "CHEM1A Topic 1 Test: The Nature of Science".
        review1.jpg

      • From here, it's easy to see that from the 2 review units listed, "1.2 The Scientific Method" has been completed before (notice the green checkmark icon). This means you already obtained a mastered level for this unit at some point (when you finished it for the first time).

      • Now, let's say another day you go to the review unit under "Retake 1 - CHEM1A Topic 1 Test: The Nature of Science".
        review3.jpg

      • When you open it, it looks like you haven't completed any of the review units here, right? But you see how the second one has the same name as the example we saw above, "Review: 1.2 The Scientific Method"?

      • Once you open it, you can clearly see you have mastered it before. So, it may still help you learn and reinforce the previous knowledge, but it will not count as a mastered unit. Note: It will still count for Accuracy

      • The same thing is true for the Review units under the "Retake" 2, 3, 4, etc., so keep it in mind.

Content not tracked

  1. "Retake" versions of tests. They clearly indicate they are "Retakes" on the name of the unit, and are only needed if the test wasn't passed on the first try.

  2. Quizzes. Easy to identify by the "QUIZ" word in a purple oval. But they are a vital part of the Knewton learning process, so make sure to complete and pass them!

Summary

In Knewton, Accuracy and Mastery data are calculated based on specific types of content. This includes regular content from learning objectives, tests, and review units. However, retake versions of tests and quizzes are not currently tracked for these metrics.
