Overview

Whether and how students can use AI tools — including large language models such as ChatGPT — is decided by each student's school. Schools set their own rules for which AI tools are allowed, when they can be used, and how students should use them for their assigned work.

Because these rules are set at the school level, they can differ from one school to another and can change over time. If you are a student or a Guide and you are not sure which AI tools are permitted, confirm the current expectations with your school leadership before proceeding.

When in doubt, always ask and look for confirmation rather than assuming a tool is or isn't allowed.

Examples of rules a school might set

The following are only examples to show that expectations vary between schools; they are not a fixed or universal rule:

• A school may allow a particular AI tool for some activities but not for others.
• A school may limit certain tools during specific times — for example, restricting AI features built into the Chrome browser (such as Google Lens) during core skills time, while allowing other AI tools outside of core hours.
• A school may specify how students should submit their work for AI grading, brainstorming, or feedback within an activity.

Your school's current guidance is the authority on what is allowed.

Getting help

If your school has confirmed a specific AI tool or app for an activity and you run into a technical problem with it, reach out to Support with the exact app name, the link you are using, and the error you are seeing, and we can look into the technical issue.

• If a school has confirmed a specific approved app and there is a technical problem with it (e.g., students can access it when they're not supposed to), handle it as a normal learning-app issue once you have the exact app name and the specific error.
