Camera Not Working

You might be trying to use your camera on an app (for example, to join a coaching call on Google Meet), but the app says your camera cannot be found.

This article follows the most common solutions. Follow these steps in order.

Step 1: Check for a physical camera shutter or camera toggle

Some laptops have a privacy shutter or a camera on/off key.

  • Look near the built-in camera at the top of the screen.
  • If there is a slider, cover, or shutter, make sure it is open.
  • Some laptops also have a keyboard key that turns the camera off. Look for one, press it, and test again.

Step 2: Check whether your device detects the camera

This section depends on your device type. Please click and expand the relevant section:

▸ For Windows
  • Open: Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Cameras
  • If your camera appears and works from here, move to the next step.
  • If you camera does not work or shor up here, try these steps:
    1. For external cameras, confirm the camera is connected
    2. Restart the laptop
    3. Go to Settings → Privacy & security → Camera and turn on:
      • Camera access
      • Let apps access your camera
      • Let desktop apps access your camera
    4. Return to Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Cameras and click Search for cameras
▸ For iPad
  • Open Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera
  • Make sure the app or browser being used has camera access
  • Reopen the app/browser and try again
  • Restart the iPad
▸ For macOS
  • Open: Apple menu → System Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera
  • Enable access for the browser or app being used
  • Quit and reopen the browser/app if it is missing from the list
  • Restart the Mac and test again

Step 3: If the device sees the camera but the learning app still does not

If your device can detect the camera but the learning app still says the camera is unavailable, the next step is to check Chrome’s camera permissions.

  • From the site itself.
    1. Click the icon next to the URL.
    2. Set Camera to Allow.
    3. Refresh the page.
  • If you never see a prompt:
    1. Open browser Settings → Privacy & Security → Site Settings → Camera.
    2. Confirm the correct camera is selected.
    3. Ensure the site/domain is not blocked.
