When you open Chrome, you might occasionally see this frustrating message: "Profile error occurred - Something went wrong when opening your profile. Some features may be unavailable."
This error prevents our learning apps from working correctly and may cause them to repeatedly ask you to restart Chrome. Don't worry - this can usually be fixed with a few steps!
How to Fix Chrome Profile Errors
The solution involves completely closing Chrome and clearing some temporary files that might be causing the problem. Follow these instructions for your device:
Windows Instructions
- First, let's completely close Chrome:
- Press
Ctrl+Shift+Escto open Task Manager - Look for any "Google Chrome" processes
- Select each one and click "End Task"
- Make sure ALL Chrome processes are closed
- Press
- Now, let's clear Chrome's profile data:
- Press
Windows key + Rto open the Run dialog - Type
%localappdata%\Google\Chromeand press Enter - This opens a folder with Chrome's files
- Select everything in this folder (press Ctrl+A)
- Delete all selected items (press Delete key)
- Click "Yes" if it asks for confirmation
- Press
- Reopen Chrome:
- Chrome will start fresh and ask you to sign in to your profile
- Enter your Alpha school email and password
- Chrome should now work correctly!
Mac Instructions
- First, let's completely close Chrome:
- Press
Command+Option+Esc(⌘+⌥+Esc) - Select "Google Chrome" from the list
- Click "Force Quit"
- Make sure Chrome is fully closed
- Press
- Now, let's clear Chrome's profile data:
- Open Finder
- Press
Command+Shift+G(⌘+⇧+G) - Type
~/Library/Application Support/Google/Chromeand click Go - Select all items in this folder (press Command+A)
- Move them to Trash (Command+Delete)
- Reopen Chrome:
- Chrome will start fresh and ask you to sign in to your profile
- Enter your Alpha school email and password
- Chrome should now work correctly!
